Exploring the Beatitudes-a three Session course for small groups in the Diocese of Oxford.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up to the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven .
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Bishop Steven invites us to ask ourselves three questions as we read the Beatitudes together:

1. What do these verses tell us about Jesus Christ?
2. What do these verses tell us about the Church?
3. What do these verses tell us about what it means to be human?

His vision for all of us within the Diocese of Oxford is respond to the call to be a more Christ-like Church and he asks us to use the Beatitudes to focus on three qualities; to be  Contemplative, Compassionate and Courageous.

During this course, held monthly on Saturday mornings from 9.30am-10.30am over a breakfast of pastries and healthy fruit, we will be looking at these three qualities rooted in the eight sayings of the Beatitudes.

The dates are-

Saturday 13th January-A Contemplative Church
Saturday 10th February-A Compassionate Church
Saturday 10th March-A Courageous Church
