The churchyard has memorial stones dating back to 1857. These remember many everyday folk of Maidenhead, as well as local dignitaries – including former mayors of the town, previous vicars of the church, and daughters of barons and bishops. There are also a number of Commonwealth War Graves for service personnel from the parish who fell in the wars. More information can be found about these (ADD LINK to world war info)
The churchyard is a peaceful space to sit and contemplate, to listen to the birds and watch the scampering squirrels, butterflies and bees at work.
We have a small team of local volunteers who help to look after this precious green space. Our aim is to create a churchyard that encourages a wider range of wildlife, as well as one that is more welcoming to human visitors, while always remaining respectful of the original purpose of the churchyard.
So, as we uncover more ‘lost’ monuments and the stories of those they remember, we are also planting pollinator friendly flowers, and native hedging, and leaving undisturbed corners of brambles and nettles (essential for the caterpillars of some UK butterflies).
We are discovering many plants, flowers and fungi, which are being catalogued. Around 100 different plants and flowers and about 20 fungi have been seen throughout the year.
