All Saints was founded thanks to the generosity of two sisters, Maria and Emily Hulme, daughters of an evangelical clergyman in Reading. They wanted to establish a new church in the Tractarian style, also known as Anglo Catholic or high church. In consultation with the Bishop of Reading, they chose a rural site in the parish of Bray.
G E Street, then in his 30s and recently appointed architect to the Oxford Diocesan Church Building Society, was chosen as architect. It was built between 1854-57. He is said to have regarded All Saints as his most important church design, and it is Grade 1 listed.
But our history isn’t just about the building. The families who lived in the parish have played parts in the World Wars and the local community since the church was founded.
